Description: There are many different types of wasps including mud daubers, paper wasps, yellow jackets and cicada killers. Cicada killers are large insects that kill the noisy cicadas found in trees and then bury the body with an egg into the ground. Their sting can be very painful. The most common wasp in this area is the yellow jacket. With houses, they usually find a hole in the mortar and immediately move in between the walls. Never block this entrance once it is in use, this will cause the wasps to move inside and possible emerge into your home. Paper wasps are also a common wasp in the Kent area. These wasps have the ability to chew through wood, cement and dry wall. Paper wasps can do real damage to the interior walls of a home if they are sealed in by the homeowner. It is also not recommended to use an aerosol insecticide, as many aerosols have a repellent as an ingredient and that will also force the wasps into the house. The proper way to destroy a wasp nest is to apply a registered insecticidal dust to the entrance hole. The returning wasps will carry this dust into the nest and the dust will destroy the hive. After two days of inactivity, it is recommended to seal the hole with silicone caulking as other wasps may re-infest the old nest. There is always a risk of being attacked and stung while treating a nest. If this is a concern, treat the nest during the cooler evening hours or call us.
